Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Course Description

Safeguard CPR offers the American Heart Association Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens course.
Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens teaches employees how to protect themselves and others from being exposed to blood or blood-containing materials. Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens is designed to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements for Bloodborne Pathogens training.

The Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens course uses the PACT acronym (Protect, Act, Clean, Tell) and slogan, “Make a PACT, Know How to Act,” to help students learn and easily recall bloodborne pathogens training.

Students learn how to:
  • Protect themselves from exposure to bloodborne pathogens
  • Act when exposed to blood or blood-containing materials in the workplace
  • Clean themselves and the area when exposed to blood or blood-containing materials in the workplace
  • Tell or report any exposure to blood or blood-containing materials in the workplace
  • Explain the importance of taking the Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Course
  • Define bloodborne pathogens
  • Describe the four main steps for staying safe when facing an occupational exposure
  • Discuss how universal precautions, personal protective equipment, and handwashing can protect them from infection
  • Recognize warning signs and labels for biohazards
  • Recall how to safely remove gloves
  • Discuss how to dispose of sharps and other blood-containing items
  • Identify the types of spills and methods to clean them
  • Discuss their exposure control plan

Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Course Cost

(Payment must be received at least 24 hours prior to class time or $25 Walk-In fee applies. Please call for availability if paying less than 24 hours.)
The Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens course is designed specifically for workers with a reasonable chance of coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens such as correctional officers, childcare workers, security guards, maintenance workers, school personnel, hotel housekeepers, health and fitness club staff and tattoo artists. This course is designed to meet OSHA requirements for bloodborne pathogens training when paired with site-specific instruction. Upon completion of the online course, students receive a course completion certificate that can be presented to employers. Please contact your employer to ensure that you are selecting the correct course.
